ABOUT SANTORINI
Santorini is the furthest island of the Cyclades complex, located in its south and one of the most special island of the world.
It was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions which affected the whole Aegean.
Before the big volcanic destruction, the island was round and it had the name “Strogyli” (the round one), later the island acquired the name “Kalisti” (the beautiful one) and finally it got the name Thira after its first ruler. The island’s patron saint was St. Erini and the foreign sailors called it St Irini – thus Santorini.
Around 1550 – 1500 B.C. a violent volcanic explosion caused the submergence of the central part of Santorini, creating a huge basin called the caldera.
In 1956 another severe volcanic eruption caused a vast destruction over the island, but finally its people managed to re-built and develop the island into one of the most popular and well-loved vacation spots in the world.
In the east, miles of black and red sandy or pebbled beaches create an astonishing sight. Everywhere you can see small domed churches and remnants of days gone by.
